John Morfey achieved a lifetime ambition when he visited the Salk Institute in California.
The Salk Institute in La Jolla, California is a world-leading medical research facility founded by Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine. Designed by Louis Khan and completed in 1965, it is a masterpiece of architecture.
The design is highly flexible and has accommodated constantly changing research requirements for 50 years. The beautifully detailed in situ concrete structure defines all the spaces; it has no finishes, and the complex structural design copes with its earthquake zone requirements while appearing deceptively simple. And the central court, and the flanking buildings, are things of beauty.
