REDBORNE SCHOOL, AMPTHILL

The new hall, sixth form area and classrooms for Redborne School were completed in July 2015.

The building is planned around a ‘street’ with clusters of spaces arranged along it. This allows the project to be phased without impinging on the use of the building. The ‘street’ is lit at the top with a continuous rooflight and at low level with continuous light fittings. The hall is situated as far as possible from an adjacent housing estate in order to reduce visual impact while allowing the massing to create a backdrop for the sports field.

Materials are chosen to accentuate the massing and define the street in a contemporary way. The hall, with its motorised retractable seating, is a versatile space with a high-specification acoustic performance.

STEPHEN GEORGE & PARTNERS CELEBRATE HERMAN MILLER COMPLETION

The new 150,000 sqft production and storage warehouse with 25,000 sqft ancillary offices for Herman Miller reached practical completion in June 2015.

During the 9 month construction period, the most challenging aspect in delivering the project was the CAM area (houses the ancillary offices, canteen and design street), while the warehouse was also custom designed to accommodate all the manufacturing and storage requirements.

The CAM area required creative and intricate detailing due to the nature of the bespoke design and the choice of materials; in particular the Reglit (glazing system) and CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) in conjunction with the steel structure.  These elements are all encapsulated within the Design Street; a double height Atrium space connecting the warehouse with the offices and social areas.

With the many shades of grey present within the scheme’s design street, this provides a canvas for Herman Miller to model their pieces of work; the use of the coloured feature walls breaks this up while enhancing and brightening the environment.  This space is also naturally illuminated by the circular roof lights which pierce the CLT roof, with the double height curtain walling to both ends of the design street, to let light in to the heart of the building.

The additional sports pavilion we have delivered as part of the scheme for the local council was completed in mid-April 2015.

STEPHEN GEORGE & PARTNERS WINS A CONSTRUCTION AWARD

Stephen George & Partners’ Library Resource Unit project for the Department of Health at Quarry House Leeds has been awarded “Highly Commended” in the Yorkshire and Humber Constructing Excellence Awards 2014.

These awards are intended to reward projects which make a contribution to best industry practice, particularly in the fields of integrated working and stakeholder involvement.  In short, they celebrate ‘going that extra mile’.

The Library project involved extensive environmental modelling to ensure adequate daylighting was maintained to the existing adjacent office areas.  The design and construction process also involved very close cooperation between members of the design team and the contractor to examine and resolve areas of detail above and beyond that normally expected of such a small project.  This has resulted in a very successful space that has delighted those working in it and in which the attention to detail paid by the design team is self-evident.

The awards were presented at a Gala Dinner in Sheffield City Hall on 18th July which was attended by representatives of the design team and the client organisations.

GOOD THINGS COME OUT OF SMALL BOXES

Stephen George & Partners recently completed a Library Resource area project for the Department of Health in Quarry House, Leeds, and it has been shortlisted for Project of the Year and Innovation of the Year in the Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2014.

Taking place on Friday 18th July 2014 at Sheffield City Hall, the awards recognise & reward the best of construction innovation & best practice in the region. These awards have grown to become one of the highlights of the business calendar with over 250 construction professionals regularly attending to celebrate the best that the regional built environment sector has to offer. Needless to say, we're delighted to be included!

The Quarry House Library project, although relatively small, demonstrates how attention to detail and a consideration of the impact on an existing work environment can create a positive improvement in the workplace.

SHELTERED APARTMENTS FOR THE ELDERLY OPENS

The Lawley Extra Care scheme has officially opened.

Following on from the completion last year of the Mixed Use District Centre scheme at Lawley, Stephen George & Partners have recently completed an Extra Care facility, again with HDD as client and novation to Clegg construction but with Sanctuary Housing as the end user.  

The four storey building fits snugly onto a very tight site, it features 60 apartments (2 bed and 1 bed) and a gym, hair salon, café/bar, landscaped garden, and sheltered roof garden.

The building forms a backdrop to Lawley Square and many of the apartments enjoy views over the Square or the surrounding countryside.

Like the main scheme the design encompasses a modern style, softened with references to tradition through consideration of materials, form and hierarchy.  The distinctive bays of the apartments have been designed to break up the building’s considerable mass and punctuate the roofline.

The SGP team working on this project were Chris Wicks, Stuart Hancox, Satnam Flora and Shitel Nathu.
