REDBORNE SCHOOL, AMPTHILL

The new hall, sixth form area and classrooms for Redborne School were completed in July 2015.

The building is planned around a ‘street’ with clusters of spaces arranged along it. This allows the project to be phased without impinging on the use of the building. The ‘street’ is lit at the top with a continuous rooflight and at low level with continuous light fittings. The hall is situated as far as possible from an adjacent housing estate in order to reduce visual impact while allowing the massing to create a backdrop for the sports field.

Materials are chosen to accentuate the massing and define the street in a contemporary way. The hall, with its motorised retractable seating, is a versatile space with a high-specification acoustic performance.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

On Wednesday 29 April, 2015, Abigail Humphreys and Alex Stewart-Long represented Stephen George & Partners LLP at Pipers Corner School’s Careers Fair in Buckinghamshire.

Using their experience of studying and working in practice, Abigail and Alex had the chance to talk to girls about a career in architecture, challenging the perception of a male-dominated profession. They used their very popular stall to showcase some of the practice’s range of work and discuss the details of the university course, as well as what to expect when getting into the workplace.

Abigail and Alex were keen to inspire the girls, and the myth that students “have to be a genius at maths and physics to be an architect” was quickly dispelled! The evening was very successful and some of the girls were really excited to learn more about the potential of becoming an architect.

STEPHEN GEORGE & PARTNERS SUPPORTING LOCAL UNIVERSITY

The Leicester office of Stephen George & Partners LLP has a long-running relationship with De Montfort University. Our involvement includes the employment support of students, external examiner roles, guest lecturing and part-time teaching staff.

With this established local connection, Stephen George & Partners LLP has given its support to a new course, which is designed to help students develop the skills they require to become specialists in the science of architecture, technology, building design and construction.

Launching in 2015, the Architectural Technology BSc course has been designed to meet the current industry demand for graduating students with skills in technical and design capability, to enhance their employability for professional practice and to meet the continually evolving needs of the construction industry.

With the increasing demand for designers who can demonstrate both architectural and technology skills, the industry is especially seeking designers with a knowledge and understanding of Sustainability and with abilities to demonstrate the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM).

We are pleased to see that the University continues to expand its offer to students with the introduction of the new course, whilst at the same time also providing opportunities for valuable work experience placements within industry.

Stephen George & Partners LLP has given its full support for the course, not only in providing input within the course structure but also with its delivery and professional practice support for students and graduates. As a Chartered RIBA Practice, we look forward to seeing the next generation of Architectural Technologists thrive on this new course and then go forward to make valuable contributions to the construction industry and the environment in the future.

STEPHEN GEORGE & PARTNERS INTERN GRADUATES

Piotr Wojciechowski (Peter) spent two years working alongside the Stephen George and Partners' Leeds team during the second and third years of his BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology degree course and we are delighted that Piotr graduated on 23rd July with a 2:1 with honours.

Piotr was originally put in touch by one of our former employees, Tahira Hamid, who is now course leader at Leeds Metropolitan University. Piotr spent two days a week working in the Leeds office on his college work. He made good use of the extensive knowledge, experience, wisdom and advice at his disposal. We think he's done extremely well!

Piotr was great to have around - he still has that youthful optimism that can so quickly evaporate after decades of working in our capricious industry. He also had the delightful habit of bringing fabulous and enormous cakes into the office for us all to share. Good man!

We all wish him well in his future career.
